Juvenile ExcluderOne of the controls fisheries authorities are taking, is that the fishing boat class six (of 364 metric tons and up) that caught species using the seiner system, must install the juveniles excluder grid  before leaving for fishing ground. This oversight stems from a provision contained in the Ministerial Agreement 133 of 10 July 2008.

Panama – Tuna fishing exclusion zone restored

Zuleika PinzonA presidential decree signed on 16 February re-established a banned fishing zone in the Panamanian Pacific where purse net tuna fishing is prohibited.

“The marine-coastal protection zones and the special management of the Pacific are a guarantee for the activities of artisanal, sports, and commercial fishing and ensure that activities like tourism maintain an important role within our economy and are sustainable,” states Executive Decree N° 7/2009, published in the Gaceta Oficial. Seychelles – EU signs new tuna fishing accord

Port Victoria SeychellesEuropean Union (EU) fishing vessels have resumed their activities in the tuna-abundant waters of the Seychelles on Sunday following the negotiation of a new licensing deal with the islands’ government.

Three weeks ago, Seychelles officials suspended EU vessels from fishing the archipelago’s waters when talks for licence renewal terms went into stalemate. Fisheries is a vital source of foreign exchange income for the country’s heavily indebted economy. Read the rest of this entry »
