Military ProtectionSpanish fishermen operating in the Indian Ocean on Monday called for more military protection, with an extension of the zone of intervention of the European operation ‘Atalante’ against piracy, Southern Somalia.

“Faced with a military deployment in the Gulf of Aden, pirates have shifted their attacks to the southeast” of Somalia, says in a statement the Spanish fishing confederation, CEPESC. Half hundred of European fishing boats are now refugees in the Mozambique channel to the shift of the attacks of pirates “who come to the area of the Seychelles.

RP, PNG ink pact for fisheries cooperation

Philippinnes and Papua New GuineaBORACAY ISLAND , Aklan – The fishing industry of the country yesterday got a big boost with the signing of a bilateral fisheries agreement with Papua New Guinea .

President Macapagal-Arroyo and Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding for fisheries cooperation at the Shangri-la Boracay Resort and Spa here between Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap and Ben Semri, Minister of Fisheries of Papua New Guinea.

Thai Union 3 at MaheWe receive as usual a short mail from Gilles aboard of the Via Avenir, here is what he told us:

“A lot of fishing in the Mozambique Channel , the Spanish and DPC French, we went to Diego Suarez Thursday for  crew replacement  until Friday  it remains for me to make one trip more and then I returned to France”

There is  some Somali pirates bothering us, there are coming here in the waters around Seychelles, we are playing a hidden cache with these distress

RI exports tuna worths US$337.89 million

descargaDenpasar (ANTARA News) – Indonesia`s tuna and skip jack tuna fish exports in 2008 reached 125,933 tons worth US$ 337,89 million, or up from 121,316 tons worth US$304.34 million a year earlier, fisheries official said.

Dr Ali Supardan, Fisheries Catch affairs Director General at Maritime and Fisheries Ministry made the statement here Monday, adding that the country`s fish export in the last four years (2005-2008) rose.

ReportSkipjack Prices

  • Bangkok – Skipjack $1100 m/ton. This is a drop in price due to lower demand due to 10 day closing of canneries for  the Thai new years
  • Ecuador – Skipjack prices $1350 m/ton. This is a rise due to lack of fish

Indian Oceans fleets are catching at an average if 10 metric tons a day, 30% lower than expected.

Yellowfin Prices

  • Bangkok – Yellowfin prices $1550 per m/ton for 10kgs and up
  • Spain  – Yellowfin prices $1750 m/ton 10kgs up
  • Ecuador – Yellowfin prices $1600 per m/ton 20kg+

tuna_indonesiaThe registration and limitation of tuna vessels operating in the Indian Ocean are likely to be at the top of the agenda during the 13th session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission, or IOTC, to be held in Bali from Thursday through Sunday.

Officials at the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry said that this year’s meeting aimed to maintain the sustainability of tuna stocks and eliminate illegal fishing in the region through better registration of fishing vessels.
