Canneries mum on moves to stem increasing wage costs

With speculation once again rife in the community about the canneries leaving in light of the May federal minimum raise requirement, neither company has confirmed the actions they will be taking to defray the increased cost of doing business in the territory.

StarKist Company offered no comments on the latest report of the company’s plans to implement another reduction in workforce at StarKist Samoa or on the status of one of its senior managers, Barry Mills.

The Governor’s Office has received information indicating that the tuna cannery Samoa Packing is making plans to close down.

Canary calls increase the quota for tuna fleet

Atunero CanariasThe counselor of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Canary Islands, Pilar Merino, today called the European Commissioner for Fisheries, Joe Borg a reunion in order to claim special treatment for the sector of the archipelago, and especially an improvement in its share of bluefin tuna.

Borg was interviewed by Merino during his visit to the Seafood fair and has requested a bilateral meeting to discuss the matters of concern to fisheries and canary aquaculture, “according to the press said the counselor.

Pole fishingBrussels, Belgium — Greenpeace has launched guidelines and an on-line pre-order petition at the European Tuna Conference in Brussels calling on retailers, restaurants and tuna traders to pre-order and shift their supplies to sustainable and equitable skipjack tuna.

Many stocks of tuna species are dangerously in decline. Even fisheries not yet fully exploited are using fishing methods that negatively impact juvenile tuna and other vulnerable species such as sharks and turtles, leaving the marine environment in peril.

Ecuador tuna catch and exports to the European Union (EU) on good level, but the possibility that during a meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTO)-to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, in the coming days, the fees charged to Asian tuna off the 24-14 percent, will trouble the Ecuadorian tuna.

  • Bangkok – Skipjack $1050 m/ton. This is a 5% fall on February prices. Reports say that market fell below $1050 for Skipjack in the Maldives to packaging plants in Thailand. These low prices were an isolated sale but did cause a ripple in the market.
