The largest discharges of bonito in Basque ports

tunidosThe ports of Hondarribia, Getaria and Ondarroa  received yesterday the largest discharge of tuna from the beginning of the campaign in late June: 300 MT. Figures that provide at least a little to lift the morale of arantzales after a few months to catch.

Hondarribia downloaded yesterday 100 MT of bonito, with an average price of 2.85 euros per kilo. For his part, Getaria received  170,000 kilos, with an average of 3.30 euros a kilo. Ondarroa in the figure was somewhat lower, 25,000 kgs, but was traded at prices ranging from 4.10 to 3.60 euros. The piece of tuna, a lesser amount, were sold between 6.90 euros to 6.20 kilos.

TUF ready for B3bn in net profit next year

Thai Union Frozen Products Plc (TUF), the country’s largest tuna exporter, expects a record high bottom line this year and is aiming for a net profit of 3 billion baht next year, according to president Thiraphong Chansiri.

“This year, our profit is likely to break the record, our earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) are stronger and cashflow is in good position,” said Mr Thiraphong.

Iiuna CapturedIn agreement of the Board of Directors this month of July and received in the 8436 Act, published in April 2005, article 59 states require that INCOPESCA establish a satellite monitoring system to monitor and control the activity of the  fishing vessels engaged in tuna fishing with purse seines in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Costa Rica.

The agreement mentioned above that tests have been conducted to evaluate the  various monitoring satellite systems to monitor which the agreement referenced,  this document emphasizes the mandatory implementation in both domestic and boats under foreign flag and using the purse seine and operate in Costa Rican waters.

jap_longlinerThe Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council concluded its four-day meeting today at the King Kamehameha Beach Hotel in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, with recommendations to ensure the viability of longline fisheries managed by the Council under the Pelagics Fishery Management Plan (FMP) for the Western Pacific Region.

Pacific tuna catches are additionally subject to the international management measures of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) in the Western and Pacific Ocean and the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

Peru – Tuna fishing banned for two months

peruvian_purseinerLima, Jul. 27 (ANDINA).- Tuna and tuna-like species will be off limits to both purse seiner vessels of more than 182 tonnes of transport capacity and longliners of more than 24 meters in total length that operate under the jurisdiction of Peru in the Eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO), from 1 August to 28 September 2009.

The measure was prepared by the Ministry of Production (Produce) under the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) resolution, which puts forth a conservation programme for yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, and skipjack tuna in the EPO between 2009 and 2011, fis.com reported.

American Samoa – Star-Kist laying off about 350 workers

don_binottoPAGO PAGO, AMERICAN SAMOA – StarKist Co. has confirmed it is laying off about 350 workers from its tuna cannery in the U.S. territory of American Samoa over the next several months.

Mary Sestric, a spokeswoman for the Pittsburgh-based company, said Wednesday via e-mail that the layoffs include both salaried and hourly workers at StarKist Samoa, which has about 2,000 workers.
