Mazatlan- Pinsa import raw material to keep production

logo_pinsaDuring the month of February arrived in Mazatlan, two foreign tuna seiners to unload their catch to the  company Pescados Industrializados S.A.

The “Daniela F” Belize-flagged vessel with a carrying capacity of 2500 tonnes discharge approximately 1,700 tonnes of tuna and Vicente F “under flag of Nicaragua  discharge around 1200 tonnes.

Somalia – Thai Union free after ransom payment

Thai Union 3The tuna fishing vessel belonging to Asia’s biggest canned tuna exporter, Thai Union Frozen Products, was seized on October 29, 2009 with 23 Russians, two Filipinos and two Ghanaians on board.

“We have released the ship after we received $3 million in ransom,” a pirate named Hassan told Reuters. “The ship is named Thai Union, its crew have safely moved from the Somali coast.” Read the rest of this entry »

tuna_2010It appears that the dawn of the new decade has ushered in an era of readjustment and consolidation in the global tuna industry with special focus on resource sustainability. A move by some European nations to put northern bluefin tuna under CITES List I, if successful, would result in a total trade ban of the species resulting in the collapse of the multi-billion dollar sashimi tuna trade. Even otherwise, many other developments are bound to affect the trade in high-valued tunas. ICCAT’s and CSSBT’s decision to reduce quotas for northern bluefin and southern bluefin tunas respectively and the proposed moratorium on bigeye tuna fishing in the western and central Pacific ocean will undoubtedly reduce sashimi tuna supplies and much affect the market. Australian Tuna Cannery to Get Shifted to Thailand

John West Canned TunaAs a result of quota cutbacks in 2009, the John West Tuna cannery, known as Port Lincoln Tuna Processors, is planning to do away with its production, in May. The cannery is looking forward to get shifted to Thailand.

At present, the Australian cannery employs 260 people. The shifting would lead to loss in the jobs. However, the exact figures have not been released yet. Read the rest of this entry »

Edmund Gann, boat owner, dies at 86

Edmund Gann and Arnold Fernandes Picture Courtesy: Arnold  FernandesEdmund Gann, who owned a fleet of tuna-fishing boats and campaigned top Thoroughbreds throughout the world, died after a bout with cancer on Sunday, according to a spokesperson at his San Diego-area office.

Frabelle Fishing Corp from the Philippines promised to provide thousands of job opportunities.
