Philippines Tuna WorkersSURIGAO CITY, Sept 1 (PNA) – Economic boom continues to spur in this nickel and city of adventure in northeastern part of Mindanao as an American-Japan business partners are set to build a $ 21-million cannery plant here, city officials here reported Tuesday.

StarKist: Phase 1 of cannery layoffs started Sat.

pago_pago_harborPAGO PAGO, American Samoa — Nearly half of the 800 workers StarKist Co. planned to lay off at its American Samoa tuna cannery this year will lose their jobs this weekend.

“The first phase of layoffs will commence on Aug. 28, affecting 380 employees,” StarKist Samoa General Manager Brett Butler testified Thursday before the U.S. territory’s House Commerce Committee.

Bumble Bee tuna canner looking into sale, merger

bumblebeeSAN DIEGO — Bumble Bee Foods, a well-known canned tuna company headquartered in San Diego, said Friday it has hired J.P. Morgan Securities to “explore various strategic alternatives.”

Among the company’s options could be the sale of the company and its assets or a merger with another company.

In 2008, a private investment firm bought Bumble Bee for $600 million. Bumble Bee, which began in Astoria, Ore., came to San Diego after the company bought Sun Harbor Industry cannery in the late 1970s. Read the rest of this entry »

New fishing agreement with the Republic of Seychelles

Port Victoria SeychellesThe protocol to the Fisheries Partnership Agreement between the EU and the Republic of Seychelles has just been renewed for a 3-year period starting in January 2011.

Following the Joint Committee meeting held under Article 9 of the Fisheries Partnership Agreement between the European Union and the Republic of Seychelles, the Seychelles delegation, led by Mrs Veronique Herminie (Chairperson of Seychelles Fishing Authority or SFA), and the European Union delegation, led by Mr. Constantin Alexandrou (Head of the Unit Bilateral Agreements of the Directorate General of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Commission), carried out negotiations for the renewal of the Agreement’s Protocol and Annex, in the presence of the Member States and the Secretariat of the Council of the European Union.
