America Samoa feeling effects of tuna cannery closure

COS Samoa PackingAmerican Samoa’s Chamber of Commerce says small businesses are starting to suffer from the closure of the Chicken of the Sea Samoa Packing plant. About 2,000 people lost their jobs when the tuna cannery closed its doors last September.

American Samoa’s Governor, Togiola Tulafono, is currently in Thailand meeting with the cannery’s owners, Thai Union, to ask for more time to find the money to purchase the cannery’s assets. Until now his attempts to get the US$5 million needed to buy the plant have met with resistance from the country’s legislators. Read the rest of this entry »

gov_togiolaAmerican Samoa’s Governor Togiola Tulafono is bound for Thailand to meet the owners of Chicken of the Sea, Thai Union, which had a cannery in Pago Pago.

The plant closed on September the 30th, putting more than 2,000 people out of work.

American SamoaI would like to call a truce between Congressman Faleomavaega and myself in the current war of words we are waging. I have raised some important points regarding our economic future that are being obscured in rhetoric about the value of our cannery workers. Gov. TogiolaThe American Samoa Governor Tulafono says he is still hopeful the Fono will have a change of heart on his proposal for his Government to acquire the assets of the shut down Samoa Packing tuna canning plant.

The Governor says workers who lost their jobs when Samoa Packing closed would have been back in work by now if his plan to buy the plant had not been held back. Read the rest of this entry »

In Point Loma, Tuna’s Legacy Lives On

The news spread quickly across Point Loma last week. On Sunday, the Cape Elizabeth, a 225-foot tuna fishing boat captained by one of the neighborhood’s own, caught fire and sank in western Pacific waters north of American Samoa.

Julio Guidi and his 21 crewmembers were rescued by a passing boat. By Tuesday evening, Guidi was on his way home. Read the rest of this entry »
