Philippines eyes Timor-Leste as possible source of tuna

Timor MapMANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) – The Philippines is looking at Timor- Leste as a possible source for tuna to fill the supply gap that will be created by a two-year ban on tuna fishing in certain parts of the high seas in the Pacific Ocean.

Malcolm I. Sarmiento, director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), said Tuesday that the government will encourage local fishing operators to fish in the waters of Timor- Leste. Read the rest of this entry »

Venezuelan Tuna seiner Calypso capsize off Colombian coast

Approaching Calypso03:39 AM TO 3:57 PM This Sunday was the last communication with the tuna boat Calypso, with Venezuelan flag, which sailed on Friday from Punto Fijo Carirubana sector in the state of Falcon.

The unit of the company Avencasa left for the Pacific Ocean at about 8:50 pm and his last contact was at 11 degrees, 05 minutes north latitude, 75 degrees, 39 minutes, 32 seconds West longitude. Filipino canned and preserved tuna is continuing to make inroads in European markets, with half-year customs figures confirming the trend evident from last year. Unloading in Majuro lagoon

This is a fly by that we did of a few of the industrial-sized tuna fishing boats in the Majuro Harbor. They have capacities well into the tens of tons — quite the operation.

We mentioned earlier that we were able to charter a Heli to shoot some aerial footage during out trip, the Helicopter was stationed on one of the tuna boats that were docked in the Majuro lagoon. The trip out to the boat was an introduction to quite the operation… Read the rest of this entry »

Star Kist Samoa hiring more workers to meet increased demand

American Samoa CanneryDespite cutting back its American Samoa workforce in the last few months, Star Kist Samoa has had to begin hiring additional workers to meet an increase in demand for canned tuna.
